Next Steps for Accessible Design of AVs

A common client user file is needed for all mobility modes

A common client user file is needed as transit morphs to intermodal multi-provider linked trips. Depending on the destination and need, one might use bikeshare, carshare, microtransit, public transit, scooters perhaps, and robocars. One client user file is needed with the basic information: Name, Address, Contact Info, Payment Info, and Accessibility Needs (if any). A common data specification is needed for this information... more »

Common Data fields for Accessibility Needs

In the new multimodal multi-provider mobility environment including robocars, we need common data fields to specify client accessibility needs. The list is longer than just which assisted devices are used and whether the rider is sighted, hearing, and English-speaking. Some riders require additional prompts to guide or reassure them due to mental health conditions (severe anxiety, for example), cognitive impairments,... more »

Improving Safety and Reliability

Autonomous Vehicles must be safe and reliable. The Sensory and Cognitive Disabilities discussion board revealed that electromagnetic sensitivity is an emerging, extremely disabling problem, and some possible solutions were presented. Research should focus on ways to design these vehicles without networking them. Machine vision and laser scanning were some ideas that might be considered. Programs such as the one at MIT... more »

Form a Working Group of People with Disabilities including EMS

A working group composed of people with disabilities including electromagnetic sensitivity (EMS) and multiple chemical sensitivity will help enable that all people will be able to use autonomous vehicles. Safe vehicles and associated infrastructure, if any, will be critical. There is great variability in people's abilities, therefore it seems prudent to involve a large enough number of people with different types of disabilities... more »
