Accessibility for Passengers with Sensory or Cognitive Disabilities

Driving

Are we incorporating plain language pictures or AAC to allow driving passengers with cognitive  or sensory  disabilities ? How are we as a nation going to change our physical and accessible infrastructure  such as roads , highways streets, and bridges to allow for accessibility in AV's  both in driving  and communities?

Accessibility for persons who are blind

Much has been posted to this discussion on the barriers facing people with Electromagnetic Sensitivity.

These are serious issues and there needs to be a solution found. Unfortunately, my expertise lies in other areas thus, I'm not able to provide any suggestions.

Recognizing that Electromagnetic Sensitivity is a barrier, it must be recognized that persons who are blind realize tremendous benefits from mobile devices.... more »

Stop Autonomous Vehicles

Some people who were in line to speak during the "public discussion" for the last webinar (Part ii, Inclusive Design of Autonomous Vehicles: A Public Dialogue Accessibility for Passengers with Sensory or Cognitive Disabilities) were electrosensitive disabled We requested to speak, were told we would be unmuted when our turn came, and after the panel presentation they announced the public discussion would begin. Option to hide sign language interpretation

It would be really helpful to have the option to show or hide sign language interpretation in presentations. Acknowledging that sign languages are different to other languages, it is challenging for some neurodivergent people to focus when two different languages are being presented at once. Captioning is less problematic, as it is the same language, just a different medium, consistent with Universal Design for Learning... more »

Matching AV services with categories of disabled passengers

"Some" Autonomous Vehicle service providers may be able to provide vehicles to passengers who would otherwise be fully capable of driving the vehicle themselves; this is what taxis and ride-sharing companies do. But the interface between those passengers and the vehicle will obviously demand a computer that is "as good as" the local knowledge and communication skills of a human driver--if not better. Also obviously, this... more »

Negative Impacts of Autonomous Vehicles & Infrastructure

Follow-through has been sorely lacking from the 2005 Access Board NIBS Report with regards to electromagnetic radiation(EMR) sensitivity. And, this issue is not limited to indoor air quality or those people with EMR sensitivities.

Having worked on environmental issues for 50 years, I consider the proliferation of radiofrequency radiation (RFR, a range of EMR, to be the most important toxics issue of our time. Not necessarily... more »

I need accommodation for my electrosensitivity everywhere

I was living a normal life before microwaves entered my workplace, my physicians' offices, hospitals and nursing homes, my clients' places of business, my home with wifi and smart meters, the streets with cell phone towers. Now, in cars too. I cannot buy a new car or ride in hybrid cars because i am so sensitive. I experience extreme weakness bordering on fainting, extreme swelling of joints for days and days, preventing... more »

Inclusion for those with Electromagnetic Sensitivity

Full inclusion and participation of all people with disabilities will be very important, as the US Access Board Webinars have emphasized. Increasing numbers of people are developing electromagnetic sensitivity (EMS) resulting in debilitating reactions to extremely low levels of electromagnetic fields emitted by computers, cell phones, and other electrical equipment. Many of those suffering from this condition have an... more »

Electro-magnetic radiation

None of the Access Board's series of virtual meetings on making Autonomous Vehicles accessible to passengers with disabilities address persons disabled by electro-magnetic radiation. I am concerned there will be no means of transportation (public or private) available for these individuals. We are a group of people who are often without a voice because many can't use computers and most can not use cell phones. We are... more »

Electric, Wireless, Other Frequencies Harm All & Halting Hard

I'd like to support the statement from helpehs regarding detrimental impacts on health, and ADD THAT this applies to those with and without disabilities, the former experiencing increased disability and the former experiencing acute ill health at a later time. One well-documented effect of artificial electromagnetic exposure is excessive oxidation, the first step to harm. There is more than one mechanism to cause... more »

Accessibility for the whole of journey

It has been great to hear of all the work being done to consider the range of future users of autonomous vehicles. It is important to consider accessible vehicles in the context of the broader transportation system and community accessibility. Some of the trickiness of using different transportation options include things like planning, understanding changing/responsive systems (as opposed to fixed schedules and stops),... more »

Vehicle Controls Should be Universally Designed

On today's US Access Board AV Inclusive Design Webinar, Dr. Robin Brewer discussed results of focus group discussions she held with members of the blind, visually impaired and people with intellectual disabilities. She discussed the issue of "command and control," and I think the comments she was relaying, primarily from members of the blind community, were interesting. According to Dr. Brewer, a number of people discussed... more »

Incorporating Human Assistance for People with Disabilities

As we discussed in the April 7 session, many people with disabilities - including older adults with dementia, people with cognitive disabilities, and people with vision disabilities - currently rely on some sort of human assistance when using transportation. This can be in the form of volunteer drivers providing "door to door" service to ensure people get to their destinations safely, help with entry and exit, or communications... more »
