USDOT should encourage and support continued long distance rail service by Amtrak. Previous proposals to cut long distance rail lines would require passengers with disabilities to make dangerous and unreliable connections between buses and trains where there may not be a station agent to assist, and where the station may not be accessible. In addition, passengers with disabilities rely on long distance rail when other forms of transportation are too expensive or inaccessible, such as private car ownership or air travel.
